Do Better Be Better for Chandler
In the wake of unimaginable tragedy, Shelley, a devoted mother, channeled her grief into a mission to break the cycle of violence in her community and beyond.
On February 1st, 2021, Shelley's life was forever altered when her 23-year-old son, Chandler, was senselessly murdered as an innocent bystander in a crime. Chandler was a vibrant young man with a promising future—he owned his first home, excelled as a chef at a beloved local restaurant, and had recently obtained his real estate license. His dreams and aspirations were tragically cut short.
Determined to honor Chandler's memory, Shelley founded the Do Better Be Better Foundation in 2021. This non-profit organization is dedicated to empowering at-risk youth, providing them with the support and resources needed to overcome challenges and achieve their full potential.
Our foundation is dedicated to empowering at-risk youth to unlock their full potential and thrive in a supportive and nurturing environment. Through scholarships, mentorship, and access to essential resources, we strive to instill confidence, cultivate resilience, and inspire hope for a brighter future.
Our programs primarily serve at-risk youth aged 14 to 20, including but not limited to those from low-income families, foster care systems, and marginalized communities.. We prioritize individuals who demonstrate potential and motivation but lack adequate support and resources.
Since 2022, our scholarship program has provided financial assistance to at-risk youth, enabling them to pursue higher education, vocational training, or other essential items to help them transition into responsible and self-sufficient adults. We believe that by removing financial barriers, we ensure that deserving individuals have the opportunity to achieve their academic and career aspirations.
Shelley travels to DYS schools around Missouri sharing her story with At-Risk Youth. By sharing her tragic story, she is able to relate to much of the youth creating more opportunities for them to rewrite their own history. Shelley also serves as a member of the SAY (Springfield Advocates for Youth) Council.
Since our inception, we have provided nearly $10,000 to deserving recipients, enabling them to make essential purchases such as a car for transportation to work or to pursue vocational training. Shelley's in-person discussions at schools have supported numerous youth in overcoming obstacles and achieving their goals.
We would like to offer personalized mentorship to each participant in a larger Do Better Be Better Progam, pairing them with caring adults who provide guidance, encouragement, and support.
Mentors would serve as role models and advocates, helping youth navigate challenges and build essential life skills.
We would like to create a vetted database of partnerships with access to essential resources such as tutoring, career counseling, mental health services. In addition we would like to include basic necessities like transportation, food, and clothing as it is critical for the holistic development of at-risk youth. Our foundation would like to ensure that participants have access to these resources, enhancing their overall well-being and stability.
